What are the symptoms for Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are generally termed as piles and these are veins present in the lower rectum. They become a disease when it gets inflammation due to some internal as well as external factors. At the time of disease, hemorrhoids are the swollen veins which are located at the lower rectum. Most of the adult around the age of 50 experience the symptoms of hemorrhoids.

There are several symptoms that will help the person in self diagnose the problem of hemorrhoid. Depending on the type of hemorrhoids the symptom varies. The most common features of hemorrhoids are painless bleeding during bowel movements, irritation and itching around the anus, pain around the anus, swelling around the anus, visible lumps near the anus, sometime fecal leakage, anemia, a person having a history of colon cancer, etc.

The symptoms of internal hemorrhoids are slightly different from the external hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids can be easily diagnosed by the person. Though the internal hemorrhoids are painless, but with the inflammation and increase in swelling can cause some kind of irritation and discomfort. Because of the presence of pain sensing nerves, even at the time of inflammation person can't sense the pain. Person having internal hemorrhoids due to swelling feel straining at the time of stool passing. Excessive straining may sometime because bleeding. Thus, rectal bleeding is the only visible symptom of internal hemorrhoids.

The external hemorrhoids can be diagnosed visibly as they are present outside the anus. Excessive itching at the rectal opening is the most prominent symptom. The other symptom for external hemorrhoids is painful bleeding, and due to inflammation the person can feel swelling at the anal region. Visibly it can be seen as clump of skin in bluish-red color.

There are two other types of hemorrhoids that show different symptoms. The prolapsed hemorrhoid developed at the time of pregnancy, its most common symptom for the protruding or prolapsed hemorrhoids are severe pain and irritation. Can be seen protruding out of the canal. The thrombosed hemorrhoids are resulted due to the protrusion of the hemorrhoid and leaving the formation of clot. Its common symptoms are severe pain, visible clot with swelling and inflammation. 

At the time of pregnancy, the symptomsof hemorrhoids can also be seen as excessive swelling on the anal area and straining at the time of bowel movements. It can be genetic disease; can check the family history for confirming the symptoms.


These symptoms can be considered by the patient for initial diagnosis and consulting the specialist.
